Bavarian metal and electrical industry expects 10.4% drop in apprenticeships

The Bavarian metal and electrical industry (M+E) expects a 10.4 percent decline in new apprenticeship contracts for 2026, according to a survey by the Bayme vbm employers' association. This would bring the total to approximately 12,000 new contracts, marking the second consecutive year of double-digit declines following a 10.9 percent drop in 2025.

Bayme vbm attributes this downturn to an ongoing structural and economic crisis affecting the industry. Despite the decline in contracts, the association noted that companies continue to face difficulties in finding sufficiently qualified applicants. While the current situation remains tense, a stabilization of apprenticeship numbers is projected for 2027.
