Bay of Bengal low-pressure system triggers heavy rain alerts for Odisha
A low-pressure area has formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal and the adjoining West Bengal-North Odisha coasts. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), this system is expected to intensify and move west-northwestwards over the next 48 hours.
The weather system is predicted to trigger heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across several parts of Odisha, including northern, interior, and coastal districts, through early September. Specific alerts have been issued, including red, orange, and yellow warnings for various districts. Authorities have warned of potential waterlogging, flooding, and flash floods in regions such as Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendujhar, and Mayurbhanj.
Beyond Odisha, the IMD forecasts widespread rainfall and thunderstorms across eastern and central India, including West Bengal, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and Bihar. In addition to heavy rain, gusty winds reaching 40-60 kmph are expected along the Odisha coast. Due to rough sea conditions, fishermen have been advised to refrain from venturing into the sea until August 31.
