Bay of Bengal depression triggers heavy rain and sea warnings in India and Sri Lanka

A deep depression over the Bay of Bengal has crossed the coasts of northern Andhra Pradesh and southern Odisha, triggering widespread weather disruptions across India and Sri Lanka.

In India, the system has weakened from a deep depression into a regular depression. Heavy rainfall and gusty winds have disrupted life in South Bengal, including Kolkata, where fallen trees have blocked roads. Weather authorities have issued orange alerts for several districts, including South 24 Parganas and the Midnapore regions, warning of heavy rain and winds up to 50 kmph. Coastal areas like Digha have reported rough seas, with one reported drowning incident.

In Sri Lanka, the Department of Meteorology has warned naval and fishing communities of very rough sea conditions and winds reaching up to 80 kmph. Specific maritime areas between 10°N and 22°N latitude and 82°E and 90°E longitude have been flagged for caution. Heavy thundershowers are expected along various coastal stretches, including Colombo and Galle, with wave heights potentially reaching 2.5 meters.
