Cyclone Arnab forecast to make landfall on Andhra Pradesh coast

A deep depression in the Bay of Bengal has intensified into Cyclonic Storm Arnab and is projected to become a very severe cyclonic storm by October 28. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts that the system will make landfall along the Andhra Pradesh and Yanam coasts between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam during the forenoon of October 28. At landfall, maximum sustained winds are expected to reach 115–125 kmph, with gusts up to 140 kmph.

Authorities in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha have been placed on high alert. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has directed officials to maintain 24/7 vigilance, set up district-level control rooms, and prepare for potential evacuations. In Odisha, the government has ordered the closure of schools, colleges, and Anganwadi centres in Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, and Malkangiri for October 28 and 29. Eight NDRF teams have been deployed across Odisha to manage emergencies.

Maritime warnings have been issued, with fishermen advised to remain ashore. While Sri Lanka is not expected to face a direct impact, the associated wind flow is forecast to increase rainfall across the island. Additionally, the storm's influence is expected to bring heavy rainfall to parts of Bihar and other northern Indian states.
