Cyclone Arnab intensification and landfall preparations

Overview

A low-pressure system initially identified in the southeastern Bay of Bengal on October 13 was expected to bring light to moderate rain and gusty winds to parts of Bangladesh. By late October, the system intensified significantly. The system, now identified as Cyclone Arnab, is forecast to reach very severe cyclonic storm status before making landfall on the Andhra Pradesh and Yanam coasts between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam on the morning of October 28. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts maximum sustained winds of 115–125 kmph, with gusts reaching up to 140 kmph. As the storm approaches, sea waves are expected to rise as high as 14 meters, with storm surges of 1 to 1.5 meters potentially impacting low-lying coastal areas in East Godavari, Kakinada, and Yanam. In response, authorities in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha have intensified emergency preparations. In Odisha, educational institutions in Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Malkangiri, Koraput, and Nabarangpur will close on October 28 and 29. Precautionary measures include prohibiting sea fishing, restricting access to hills and dams, and relocating residents from low-lying areas to shelters. Disaster response teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), along with personnel from the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Indian Coast Guard, have been deployed or placed on standby. The storm is also expected to impact Indian Railways, national highways, and flights. Alerts have been issued for Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, and Puducherry, with warnings of heavy rainfall for eastern Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. While the cyclone is expected to hit India, the Sri Lankan Department of Meteorology has issued red alerts for its fishing and naval communities. In response to the approaching cyclone, South Coast Railway has announced the cancellation, short termination, or short origination of 61 trains to ensure passenger safety.
