Bay of Bengal weather systems trigger heavy rain across South India

A developing low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify, potentially forming a cyclone named ‘Arnab’ by late October. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reports that an upper-air cyclonic circulation over the Gulf of Thailand and Myanmar is moving toward the North Andaman Sea, which is likely to trigger a new low-pressure area over the southeast and east-central Bay of Bengal around October 23.

In Tamil Nadu, the intensifying northeast monsoon has prompted the government to place 8,200 fire and rescue personnel on alert. Authorities are monitoring thousands of flood-prone and low-lying locations, deploying specialized equipment including rubber boats, drones, and rescue swimmers. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecast for several districts, including Coimbatore, Nilgiris, and Kanyakumari, with Chennai expected to receive moderate showers.

Other regions in South India, including Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Puducherry, are also bracing for heavy rainfall and thunderstorms. In Sri Lanka, a separate low-level atmospheric disturbance is expected to bring increased rainfall and unsettled weather, particularly in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and Central provinces. Maritime communities have been advised to exercise caution due to rough sea conditions.
