Bay of Bengal low pressure brings heavy rain to Sri Lanka
A powerful low-pressure area located in the northwest Bay of Bengal, approximately 1,000 km northeast of Sri Lanka, is expected to move west-northwest toward the coastlines of southern Odisha and northern Andhra Pradesh, India.
While there is no direct impact from the low-pressure system on Sri Lanka, its influence will cause continued rainy weather and wind circulation in the southwestern regions. Frequent rain is expected in the Central, Sabaragamuwa, Western, and North Western provinces, as well as in the Galle and Matara districts, with some areas potentially receiving more than 100 mm of rainfall.
Strong winds of 40–50 km/h are expected in the western slopes of the central highlands, North Central and North Western provinces, and the Trincomalee, Hambantota, and Matale districts. In the Bay of Bengal, heavy rain and gusts of up to 70–80 km/h are anticipated. Fishermen and maritime workers are advised not to venture into the sea until further notice.
