Bay of Bengal low pressure triggers floods in Odisha and heavy rain in West Bengal

Heavy monsoon rains triggered by low-pressure systems over the Bay of Bengal have caused significant weather disruptions and flooding across eastern India.

In Odisha, back-to-back low-pressure areas have caused rivers including the Baitarani, Jalaka, and Indravati to swell, leading to floods in seven districts: Jajpur, Kendrapara, Bhadrak, Balasore, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, and Koraput. Approximately 487,000 people have been moved to relief camps. The highest rainfall was recorded in the Joda block of Keonjhar district.

In West Bengal, a strengthening low-pressure area is activating the southwest monsoon. The Alipore Met Office has issued a heavy rain alert for the hilly districts of North Bengal. Kolkata is expected to experience light to moderate rain with thunderstorms and gusty winds, while western districts like Purulia and Bankura face potential waterlogging in low-lying areas.
