Bay of Bengal low pressure triggers heavy rain warnings in West Bengal

A new low-pressure area has formed in the northwest Bay of Bengal, triggering widespread weather warnings across West Bengal. The meteorological department predicts that the circulation may intensify into a low-pressure system by Wednesday, bringing increased rainfall to several regions.

In South Bengal, an ‘orange alert’ has been issued for North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, and both East and West Midnapore due to the risk of heavy to very heavy rainfall (7-20 cm). A ‘yellow alert’ is in place for Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, and Bankura, where heavy rain (7-11 cm) is expected. Coastal areas may experience gusty winds reaching 30 to 40 km/h.

North Bengal is also facing inclement weather. Heavy rain warnings have been issued for Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar, with thunderstorms and winds of 30-40 km/h expected in Malda and the Dinajpur districts. The unsettled weather pattern is expected to persist through Friday, with potential disruptions in hilly areas lasting until next Tuesday. Additionally, fishermen have been advised against venturing into the sea near West Bengal and Odisha due to rough conditions and high winds.
