Bay of Bengal low pressure triggers heavy rain and flooding in India and Bangladesh
A low-pressure system forming over the northwest Bay of Bengal is triggering widespread heavy rainfall and severe flooding across eastern India and parts of Bangladesh. In Odisha, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red alerts for several districts, including Kataka, Anugola, Dhenkanal, Kalahandi, and Nabarangpur, warning of extremely heavy rainfall. The flooding has already impacted over 1.34 million people across 1,703 villages in seven districts. In Kendrapara, incessant rain has left thousands stranded, damaged homes, and disrupted essential services as rivers like the Brahmani and Baitarani swell.
In response to the weather warnings, local administrations have closed schools and Anganwadi centres in districts such as Nabarangpur, Jajpur, and Bhadrak. In Jharkhand, the monsoon has regained strength, with a yellow alert issued for heavy rain through late August. Meanwhile, in Bangladesh, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department has instructed four seaports to hoist Local Cautionary Signal no. 3 due to the system, though meteorologists suggest the likelihood of it developing into a major depression is low.
Coastal regions in West Bengal, Odisha, and northern Andhra Pradesh are experiencing rough sea conditions, leading authorities to advise fishermen against venturing out to sea. While the weather system is expected to bring intermittent rain to Bangladesh and parts of Tamil Nadu, the primary impact remains concentrated in the flood-prone regions of Odisha and surrounding states.
