Bay of Bengal low-pressure system triggers heavy rain and flooding in India and Bangladesh
A low-pressure system over the northwest Bay of Bengal is triggering widespread heavy rainfall and flooding across parts of India and Bangladesh. In Odisha, the situation is critical, with over 1.34 million people in 1,703 villages affected by floods. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red, orange, and yellow alerts for various districts, with extreme rainfall expected in areas such as Kataka, Anugola, Dhenkanal, Kalahandi, and Nabarangpur.
In Kendrapara, Odisha, incessant rain has caused houses to collapse and left thousands of families stranded. While some major rivers like the Mahanadi and Brahmani are beginning to recede below danger levels, others like the Baitarani remain a concern in lower reaches. Baleshwar district has recorded its highest July-August rainfall in 19 years, totaling 1,168.6 mm.
Across other regions, Chhattisgarh and eastern Madhya Pradesh are under orange alerts for heavy rain. Jharkhand is also seeing increased monsoon activity, with heavy rain predicted through late August. In Bangladesh, the low-pressure system has prompted the Bangladesh Meteorological Department to issue Local Cautionary Signal no. 3 for four seaports, including Chattogram and Cox’s Bazar, advising fishermen to remain close to the coast.
