Bayer drug finerenone shows benefits for non-diabetic chronic kidney disease

New analyses from the Phase III FIND-CKD clinical trial indicate that finerenone reduces proteinuria and slows the decline of kidney function in patients with chronic kidney disease who do not have diabetes.

Presented at the American Society of Nephrology Kidney Week 2026, the study focused on patients with IgA nephropathy and focal segmental glomerulosclerosis. In the IgA nephropathy group, finerenone reduced the urine protein-to-creatinine ratio (UPCR) by 51% compared to a placebo after 12 months. Researchers also noted a slower loss of kidney function over 32 months and a reduction in biomarkers related to renal tissue inflammation and injury.

For patients with focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, the medication achieved a 41% reduction in the UPCR and a 40% reduction in the albumin-to-creatinine ratio after one year of treatment. The study also reported a lower annual decline in the estimated glomerular filtration rate and an estimated 42% relative reduction in the combined risk of renal failure or severe deterioration.
