Bayer wins Roundup cancer trial in St. Louis

A jury in St. Louis, Missouri, has unanimously ruled in favor of Bayer and its subsidiary Monsanto in a lawsuit involving the weedkiller Roundup. The plaintiffs, three women, alleged that regular use of the herbicide led to their development of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Their legal team argued that the product was defectively designed and that the company had been negligent in its sale.

This verdict serves as a significant test for the viability of future Roundup litigation following a June US Supreme Court ruling that limited claims based on herbicide label warnings. While previous cases focused on warning adequacy, this trial centered on allegations of defective design and intentional deception. Bayer maintains that extensive studies prove the safety of glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup.

The legal victory comes as Bayer seeks to resolve tens of thousands of other Roundup-related lawsuits through a proposed $7.25 billion settlement. This settlement, which is currently under review by a Missouri state court judge, involves a plan for capped annual payments over up to 21 years. Following the verdict, Bayer shares saw a notable increase on the DAX and other exchanges.
