Bayer litigation regarding Roundup herbicide

Overview

A jury in St. Louis, Missouri, has delivered a unanimous verdict in favor of Bayer and its subsidiary, Monsanto, in a lawsuit concerning the weedkiller Roundup. The plaintiffs, three women, alleged that the glyphosate based herbicide was defectively designed and that the company was negligent, claiming regular use led to their development of non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

The jury rejected allegations of design defect, fraud, and negligence after approximately two hours of deliberation. This verdict follows a June 2026 U.S. Supreme Court decision that limited certain state level lawsuits based on herbicide label warnings.

Bayer maintains that scientific studies prove the safety of glyphosate, despite the International Agency for Research on Cancer classifying it as probably carcinogenic to humans. Following the ruling, Bayer shares saw an increase in European trading. The company is currently seeking to resolve tens of thousands of other Roundup related lawsuits through a proposed $7.25 billion settlement.
