Bayside Shakedown new film earns 1.69 billion yen in opening week
The new film ‘Bayside Shakedown: N.E.W. Metropolis o Kakenukero!’, the first installment in the franchise in 14 years, recorded 1.69 billion yen in box office revenue during its opening week. Directed by Katsuyuki Motohiro, the film marks the return of the long-running series that originally debuted as a television drama in 1997.
The story follows the protagonist, Shunsaku Aoshima, played by Yuji Oda, who has transferred from the Bayside Station to the First Investigation Division of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department. The film features returning cast members such as Yusuke Santamaria and Miki Mizuno, alongside new additions including Shuri and Takihisa Masuda.
The franchise has a history of massive commercial success, with previous films earning over 10 billion and 17 billion yen respectively. This latest entry explores the evolution of Aoshima, who is now a veteran detective nearing retirement, while incorporating homages to both past films and classic cinema.
