BC court approves $30M settlement for Vancouver school abuse case

The British Columbia Supreme Court approved a $30 million settlement of a class‑action lawsuit over historical sexual, physical and psychological abuse at two Catholic schools in Metro Vancouver – Vancouver College and St. Thomas More Collegiate. More than 200 former students joined the class, describing long‑term mental‑health, relationship and employment impacts. Abuse at Vancouver College was alleged to have occurred from 1976 to 2013 and at St. Thomas More from 1976 to 1989.

Justice Simon Coval said he had “no hesitation” in approving the deal, which provides a trauma‑informed, confidential claims process that avoids a trial. The settlement also includes statements of sympathy from the schools and the Archbishop of Vancouver, while some claimants chose to opt out and pursue individual lawsuits. The lawsuit alleged that members of the Christian Brothers of Ireland were transferred from the Mount Cashel orphanage in St. John’s, Newfoundland, and four of those transferred were later criminally convicted. The case was filed in 2021, class‑certified in 2023, and the settlement was reached in February 2026 before court approval in July 2026.
