Vancouver Catholic school abuse settlement

Overview

In July 2026 a $30 million class‑action settlement was reached for more than 200 former students of Vancouver College and St. Thomas More Collegiate who alleged physical, sexual and psychological abuse by members of the Christian Brothers. The British Columbia Supreme Court approved the deal in early August 2026, noting that it provides a confidential, trauma‑informed compensation process without an admission of liability. Justice Simon Coval described the settlement as fair and in the best interests of the class.

The agreement covers abuse alleged to have occurred between 1976 and 2013 at the two Metro Vancouver Catholic schools. While the settlement applies to the majority of claimants, the court allowed a small number of former students to opt out and pursue individual lawsuits. The defending parties include the two schools and the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Vancouver, and the plaintiffs are represented by CFM Lawyers.

The court’s approval finalizes a lawsuit that was filed in 2021, class‑certified in 2023, and formally settled in February 2026, providing a mechanism for survivors to receive compensation and support.
