BC Greens demand community veto over AI data centre construction

BC Greens Leader Emily Lowan has criticized the NDP's current policies regarding AI data centres, arguing that the provincial government must grant local communities a greater role in the approval process. Lowan stated that the NDP's proposed measures do not provide communities with a veto over the construction of these high-power operations.

In response to the issue, NDP Leader David Eby introduced policies that include water-efficiency standards, mandated reporting of water usage, and community engagement regarding drought planning. These measures maintain existing BC Hydro power limits for such projects.

The BC Greens have proposed a more restrictive approach, suggesting a halt to the construction and operation of AI data centres until a detailed public-interest audit is conducted and a new regulatory regime is established. The party also expressed interest in collaborating with the federal government to create an independent AI oversight commission.

This political debate follows announcements from Telus regarding the development of three AI data centres in British Columbia, including locations in Vancouver and Kamloops.
