BC municipal elections draw new candidates, retirements

Veterinarian Dr. Bhupinder Johar announced his candidacy for a seat on Maple Ridge City Council, pledging improvements to transit, the local economy and community amenities. He highlighted support for a Bus Rapid Transit system and the completion of Abernethy Way.

In Chilliwack, two‑time councillor Bud Mercer said he will not run for re‑election after eight years on council and a long career in policing and federal service. His decision opens a seat as other council members and potential mayoral candidates, including Jason Lum, consider their options ahead of the provincial municipal elections in October.

The announcements come as voters across British Columbia prepare to choose mayors, councillors, school trustees and regional directors in the upcoming municipal election.
