BC municipal and provincial elections update

Overview

As the October 24 snap provincial election approaches, political activity in British Columbia is intensifying. Premier David Eby and the BC NDP have introduced new housing proposals, including an ‘unsold condo tax’ targeting empty units. This proposed levy would charge 2% of a condo’s assessed value if it remains vacant for over a year, with the rate increasing by 1% annually. This specific measure targets approximately 5,000 unsold units in the Lower Mainland, with an estimated value of $4.5 billion.

Eby also plans to increase the existing speculation and vacancy tax, proposing rates of 2% for domestic buyers and 5% for foreign purchasers. Eby cited geopolitical concerns when calling the snap election.

In the Conservative camp, the BC Conservative Party has named White Rock Mayor Megan Knight as its candidate for the Surrey South riding. Knight is set to face CentreBC leader Elenore Sturko in that contest. The party continues to navigate leadership transitions following John Rustad’s announcement that he will not seek re-election.

Municipal elections are set for October 17, creating a period of overlapping election cycles. The timing has raised concerns among municipal leaders; former Union of B.C. Municipalities president Cori Ramsay described the overlap as a ‘party foul,’ noting that the provincial election may create competition for staff and volunteers, potentially leaving municipalities short-handed.

Local candidate activity is expanding. In Langley Township, the mayoral race features incumbent Eric Woodward, who seeks re-election to continue infrastructure projects, against business executive Jay Lundgren, who is campaigning on ‘responsible financial leadership.’ In Chilliwack, 19 candidates are vying for city council seats, with platforms focusing on debt-free facility construction, senior population needs, and urban development.
