BC Transit workers begin job action in Greater Victoria

Transit workers in Greater Victoria, British Columbia, have initiated job action following 16 months of failed contract negotiations. The action began with a “uniform ban,” where bus drivers and mechanics opted to wear red Unifor shirts instead of official BC Transit uniforms.

Unifor Local 333 President Stephen Bains stated that the union is seeking improved wages, better working conditions, and increased rest and recovery times for drivers. Bains noted that delays in the transit system often prevent operators from having sufficient time to attend to personal needs. While buses remained on schedule during the initial phase of the action, the union has the legal authority to strike at any time.

In response to the labor dispute, the Victoria Transit Riders Union (VTRU) held a rally at the transit agency’s headquarters to express concern regarding potential service disruptions.
