72-year-old man injured in bear attack in Bichigiu, Romania

On 21 May 2026, a 72‑year‑old man was attacked by a bear in a remote area near the village of Bichigiu, Bistrița‑Năsăud County, Romania. The victim sustained a bite to his left leg and multiple wounds to his arms, abdomen and back. He remained conscious and cooperative throughout the incident.

Emergency services dispatched a SMURD first‑aid crew, a mobile intensive‑care team, members of the County Gendarmerie and the local police (SVSU). Because the site was about 1.5 km from the nearest road and suffered weak mobile signal, rescuers faced communication difficulties before reaching the patient and preparing him for evacuation.
