Bear euthanized in Brașov after repeated entries into residential areas

A female bear estimated to be about four years old was captured in the Noua district of Brașov, Romania, after repeatedly entering inhabited neighborhoods. Authorities placed a trap earlier in the area, captured the animal, and, noting that it bore an identification collar from a previous capture and relocation, euthanized it in accordance with legal procedures.

Municipal vice‑mayor Dan Ghiță explained that the decision followed the standard sequence of interventions—scaring, tranquilising, relocating, and, when an animal repeatedly returns, euthanasia. He highlighted that the city has recorded over 120 emergency (112) calls about bear sightings in May alone, with roughly 70 cases where the animals were not found and about 50 where they were driven back to forested zones. The incident underscores ongoing challenges in managing urban wildlife in Brașov.
