Bear roams through Przemyśl city centre, mayor issues safety alert

In the night of 19–20 June 2026 a young brown bear entered the centre of Przemyśl in south‑eastern Poland, being filmed on the market square and nearby streets. Mayor Wojciech Bakun posted a video of the animal and warned residents, writing “This is a genuine report – services are already acting, but please stay cautious.”

The city’s Crisis Management Unit, police and municipal guards were dispatched, confirmed the bear’s presence around Plac Unii Brzeskiej and monitored its movements. Officers escorted the bear towards the nearby forest, ensuring it did not pose a threat to the public. No injuries were reported.

Authorities advised people not to approach the bear, to keep a safe distance and to contact emergency services at 112 or the local crisis centre (166 767 070) if they sight the animal. This incident marks the first confirmed sighting of a bear in Przemyśl’s central area, prompting ongoing monitoring to prevent further encounters.
