Brown bear encounters across Central Europe
Overview
The wave of brown‑bear activity that began in early May 2026 continued to spread throughout Hungary, Slovakia, Austria and Poland. On 4 May a large bear roaming between Bogács and Ostoros in Hungary’s Heves county frightened residents, prompted livestock‑safety warnings and led many to stay with relatives. Two further Hungarian sightings were recorded in Aggteleki National Park (31 May near Szögliget and 1 June near Égerszög) and near Pásztó (3 June), each followed by local safety notices.
In Slovakia, early June saw a series of attacks: a 37‑year‑old forest worker was badly injured near Liptovska Anna on 3 June, a 36‑year‑old hiker was mauled in Stranavy on 4 June, and a second forest worker was wounded near Starhrad nad Liptovskou Bukovinou on 4 June. A bear also mauls a man near Stráňavy on 9 June, while a hunter killed an attacking female bear near Kremnica on 21 June; officials warned that a cub may still be roaming.
Austria recorded its first confirmed bear of the year on 9 June in Brand, Vorarlberg, with authorities issuing standard trail‑safety advice. Poland experienced a bear travelling on municipal roads in Szerzyny on 12 June, a sighting in Dębica on 17 June (alongside wolf reports), and a rare incursion into the city centre of Przemyśl on the night of 19–20 June, after which the animal was safely escorted back to forested area. Polish officials issued updated hiking guidelines on 18 June and, on 2 August, promoted family‑friendly mountain routes while reiterating bear‑safety precautions.
Travel advisories across the region continue to urge leashed dogs, avoidance of solitary walks at dawn or dusk, and immediate reporting of any bear sightings.
