Beaver kits born in Scotland's Glen Affric after reintroduction effort

At least two Eurasian beaver kits have been recorded in Loch Beinn a Mheadhoin within Glen Affric, marking the first births in the Scottish Highlands in roughly four centuries. The young beavers were born after a joint re‑introduction project by the rewilding charity Trees for Life and the government agency Forestry and Land Scotland (FLS). Releases of a family of five beavers and a pair in October 2025, followed by a further family of four in February, were monitored with wildlife cameras that captured the kits shortly after they emerged.

Tobias Leask, the beaver management officer for Trees for Life, said the kits “symbolise a wildlife success story four centuries in the making” and highlighted their role in creating wetlands, improving water quality and enhancing climate‑change resilience. Beaver Trust head of restoration Roisin Campbell‑Palmer added that the healthy kits indicate a successful settlement and breeding population, supporting Scotland’s national beaver strategy.
