Beaver reintroduction and breeding in the UK

Recent reports indicate successful beaver breeding in parts of the United Kingdom following reintroduction or natural settlement efforts.

In Scotland, the birth of Eurasian beaver kits in Glen Affric marks the first such occurrence in the Highlands in approximately four centuries. This development follows a joint reintroduction project by Trees for Life and Forestry and Land Scotland, involving several releases of beaver families between late 2025 and early 2026. Officials noted the kits represent a “wildlife success story four centuries in the making” that may aid in wetland creation and climate resilience.

Similarly, in Norfolk, England, two wild beavers were born in the Penthorp Nature Reserve, the first reproduction in the county in roughly 500 years. While beavers have been reintroduced to England since 2015, the presence of this pair in the River Wensum is notable as the nearest known wild population was previously over 200 kilometers away. The exact method by which the pair arrived in the area remains unknown, with some speculation regarding illegal releases.
