Brazil beef industry shifts as global supply and export markets evolve
The Brazilian beef industry is undergoing a structural shift as the livestock cycle enters a new phase. Conab projects a slight reduction in national beef production to 11.8 million tons in 2026, signaling a move toward lower supply after a period of high slaughter rates.
Export dynamics are diversifying. While China remains a primary partner, Brazilian states are expanding into alternative markets. Mato Grosso reported a 50.4% increase in exports to the United States in August, and other regions like Acre have seen significant growth in beef export value. However, the exhaustion of China's import quotas for 2026 has increased industrial costs for Brazilian meatpackers, who must now adapt production to meet diverse international standards.
Globally, Brazil is capitalizing on supply shortages in the United States. A declining U.S. cattle herd, driven by drought and high costs, has pushed the U.S. to lose its leadership in global beef production to Brazil. This scarcity in the American market is expected to create long-term opportunities for Brazilian exporters through 2028.
