Brazil 2026 beef market tightens
Entities: Brazil · Feira de Santana · Aprosoja Brasil · USDA · United States
Overview
Cattle‑confinement profitability stayed above R$1,000 per head in June 2026 as feed costs fell and efficiency improved. Spot boi gordo prices hovered between R$315‑R$330 per arroba, while B3 futures rose, with the October 2026 contract breaking R$350. Early July physical prices slipped to R$326.3 per arroba, the lowest since January, as producers held back cattle amid a dispute with slaughterhouses. Futures rallied, open interest topped 50,000 contracts and the October contract hit R$360 per arroba on July 16 – a year‑high – driven by a lean season that limited finished cattle for slaughter across nine major states. Prices rose up to R$5 in São Paulo, reaching around R$335 per arroba, while the physical market indicator stayed above R$330. A historic level of cow and heifer slaughter in Q1 2026 heightened supply concerns but also underpinned price strength. On July 20 boi gordo rose 0.71% to R$333.50 per arroba, confirming the bullish trend. By July 23 the price of a novilha gorda was R$330 per arroba in Paraná, Santa Catarina and Alagoas, with the lowest quoted price in Acre at R$277, and boi gordo rose 0.06% to R$342.65 per arroba in São Paulo. The boi gordo‑to‑bezerro ratio fell below 10, easing purchasing pressure. At month‑end the finished‑cattle arroba settled near R$330 after an early‑month dip to R$320, supported by slaughterhouse purchases and expectations of a firm price environment ahead of the August‑October lean season. Regional quotations showed Alagoas at R$321.50 and Santa Catarina at R$319.50, while Acre remained the low point at R$277. In the United States, July 2026 Choice beef cattle prices in Nebraska fell to US$152.3 per arroba, down from US$159.2 a year earlier, reflecting reduced post‑Independence Day demand and resumed Mexican cattle imports.
