Beef industry responds to updated 2025 dietary protein guidelines

The 2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans have introduced a significant shift in protein recommendations, increasing the suggested intake from 0.8 grams to 1.2 grams per kilogram of body weight. Dr. Shalene McNeill of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association notes that this change could effectively double the recommended beef servings for consumers.

While the protein trend remains a major focus in nutrition, McNeill suggests the topic is evolving. There is ongoing debate within the scientific community regarding whether the emphasis on protein has become excessive. To address this, the Beef Checkoff recently convened 100 protein researchers at Texas A&M University to discuss the health benefits and scientific evidence supporting higher-protein diets.

As consumer interest in protein continues, industry experts emphasize the importance of pairing beef with fiber-rich foods, such as fruits and vegetables, to promote a balanced diet.
