US dietary guideline updates and protein emphasis
Overview
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Agriculture released the 2025-2030 dietary guidelines, introducing a policy shift toward food quality under the slogan ‘Eat Real Food’. The new framework moves away from calorie and fat restriction, instead recommending a significant increase in daily protein intake from 0.8 grams to a range of 1.2 to 1.6 grams per kilogram of body weight.
These guidelines advocate for the consumption of animal-based proteins, including beef, pork, poultry, and eggs, as well as full-fat dairy and natural fats like butter and beef tallow. This approach effectively replaces the traditional nutritional pyramid that prioritized grains with a model centering animal products.
In response to these changes, the beef industry has noted that the new recommendations could effectively double the suggested beef servings for consumers. To address scientific debates regarding whether the emphasis on protein has become excessive, the Beef Checkoff convened researchers at Texas A&M University to discuss the evidence supporting higher-protein diets. While the guidelines aim to improve satiety and muscle maintenance, some critics have raised concerns regarding the compatibility of increased red meat and full-fat dairy consumption with existing limits on saturated fats.
