Spain's Guardia Civil chief faces resignation demand amid prevarication probe

The director general of the Guardia Civil, Mercedes González, and the deputy director, Manuel Llamas, have been summoned to testify before the Audiencia Nacional on allegations of prevarication and obstruction of justice. Investigators say the two officials may have exerted political pressure on the Unidad Central Operativa (UCO) to influence investigations involving the government and the celebration of the historic 2 May events.

Opposition parties, notably the PP, have called for González's resignation, describing her alleged actions as "imperdonable" and "repugnante." The scandal has triggered demands for greater independence of Spain's judicial bodies and intensified scrutiny of the interior ministry's role in the case.
