Spain corruption probe and PSOE crisis intensify

Overview

The criminal inquiry into former prime minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero expanded in early July 2026, prompting tax audits of his family and summons of Guardia Civil officials. Judges denied Zapatero’s request to suspend testimony on the €1.3 million of jewels seized from his former office, and on 13 July the anti‑corruption prosecutor and the State Attorney rejected his bid to drop the popular accusation, citing public interest and Treasury protection. On 12 July the Congress Economy Committee began reviewing the government’s proposal to renew the CNMC board. The People’s Party criticised the lack of prior consultation. Two days later, despite PP and Vox opposition, the committee approved Juan José Ganuza Fernández as CNMC president and endorsed three counsellors – Joan Capdevila, Carmen Balsa and Marina Echebarría – pledging regulatory independence and a focus on the digital economy, public procurement and merger rules. The governing PSOE faced mounting internal dissent. A 13 July report highlighted an electoral backlash to the Junts‑PSOE pact and a proposed amnesty law, with several regional branches openly criticizing the agreement. A 14 July GESOP poll showed 52 % of Spaniards favour an early general election and 55 % reject a no‑confidence motion involving Junts, the PP and Vox. Later that day, following the conviction of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s brother David Sánchez and former regional PSOE leader Miguel Ángel Gallardo, regional leaders in Extremadura publicly called for snap elections. Parliamentary accountability has also stalled. It has been four years since the last State of the Nation debate; opposition parties, led by the PP, have pushed a bill to make the debate mandatory, but it remains blocked in the Congress. Simultaneously, an extraordinary plenary session overturned the approved spending ceiling, prompting a possible confidence vote and heightening calls for early elections.
