Begoña Gómez Surrenders Passport to Madrid Court Amid Corruption Probe

On 24 June 2026, Begoña Gómez, the wife of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, handed over her passport at the Plaza de Castilla court in Madrid after Judge Juan Carlos Peinado ordered its surrender as a precautionary measure pending a possible popular jury trial.

The passport seizure follows accusations that Gómez is involved in influence‑peddling, corruption, embezzlement and misuse of public funds. Her lawyer, Antonio Camacho, confirmed the hand‑over and said the defence will seek to overturn the passport confiscation, a travel ban and a requirement for bi‑weekly court visits.

The case has elicited remarks from PSOE leaders, with Patxi López defending Gómez and satirist Pedro Ruiz criticizing the political handling. The court cited a perceived risk to Gómez’s physical integrity as justification for the precautionary measures.
