Leire scandal deepens: testimonies and prosecutor role

Overview

Following earlier testimony, the Audiencia Nacional continues to examine the alleged “Leire” scheme in which PSOE figures are accused of channeling €43,225 to former activist Leire Díez. On 13 July, former senior prosecutor Diego Villafañe was accused of having pressured the Badajoz chief prosecutor to dismiss the case on grounds of territorial competence, resulting in its transfer to Madrid under Judge Santiago Pedraz. Villafañe is scheduled to testify about his brief meetings with Díez and lawyer Jacobo Teijelo and to explain references to other prosecutors.

On 15 July, PSOE president Cristina Narbona testified before Pedraz, stating she met Díez in 2017 but denied knowledge of any plot to influence investigations. She recounted a conversation in April 2024 after Pedro Sánchez’s public address, in which Díez offered “qualified help” and mentioned “re‑conducing attacks”. Narbona said she referred the matter to the party’s secretary of organisation, who deemed it unimportant. Prosecutors Villafañe and Beatriz López, as well as senior Guardia Civil officials, also gave statements, each denying interference with the UCO’s work.

The probe remains focused on alleged payments, attempts to obtain sensitive judicial information, and potential corruption within the PSOE’s inner circle, while parallel investigations into unrelated corruption cases, such as at the state‑owned postal service, continue to heighten political scrutiny.
