Saint John the Baptist Beheading observed by Orthodox Christians

Orthodox Christians are observing the Beheading of Saint John the Baptist on September 11. The religious holiday commemorates the martyrdom of the prophet, who was executed by order of Herod Antipas following the request of Salome.

In many regions, the day is marked by strict fasting, often referred to as “dry eating” (consuming only cooked, dry foods). Various folk traditions and customs are observed, such as avoiding the use of sharp objects like knives or axes, and refraining from eating red fruits or vegetables to symbolically avoid association with the saint's blood.

Liturgical services, including the Holy Archieratical Liturgy, have been held in locations such as the Cetinje Monastery. The holiday serves as a period for prayer, spiritual reflection, and remembrance of the saint's unwavering faith.
