Beijing implements total ban on drones and related equipment
Beijing authorities have passed a new regulation that implements a comprehensive ban on drones and related equipment across the entire city. Effective November 15, 2026, the policy prohibits the flying, storage, transport, and sale of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and their components.
The measure follows a security incident on June 26, 2026, when a light aircraft collided with the CITIC Tower, Beijing's tallest building. This event highlighted vulnerabilities in the capital's low-altitude airspace security system. Rather than focusing on precise flight management, the new policy shifts toward a total ban on the possession of flight-capable hardware.
To facilitate compliance, the municipal government has proposed three disposal methods: buybacks, recycling/disposal, or shipping equipment out of Beijing. Residents who complete these processes by the deadline may be eligible for subsidies, with buybacks offering up to 30% of the sale price (capped at 3,000 yuan).
The regulation has drawn mixed reactions. While some support the move to ensure capital security, drone enthusiasts and hobbyists have expressed significant backlash, citing substantial financial losses and describing the restrictions as extreme.
