Beitbridge border sees surge in migrant crossings and vehicle‑smuggling arrests

South Africa’s Beitbridge crossing with Zimbabwe remains a focal point for large‑scale irregular migration. Thousands of migrants use informal rope‑staked rafts and other routes to bypass official posts, while a repatriation centre near the border has housed over 21,000 people. Since early June, more than 46,000 migrants have been deported or repatriated, many fleeing anti‑immigrant protests that have already claimed several foreign lives.

In a separate law‑enforcement action, Limpopo police intercepted two stolen vehicles on the N1 highway heading toward Beitbridge. A 45‑year‑old Zimbabwean and a 43‑year‑old South African were arrested on suspicion of possessing the stolen Toyota Corolla Cross and Mazda 2, respectively. The operation involved provincial police, private security firms and a tracking team, highlighting ongoing cross‑border crime concerns at the same gateway.
