Belarus bans import of various Latvian goods

Belarus has banned the import of various Latvian goods, including fish preserves and various industrial products. The Belarusian government press service stated the decision was made because Latvia continues to maintain a “non-constructive attitude” and uses “unfriendly rhetoric” toward Belarus.

This trade restriction follows heightened tensions at the border. Recent incidents include an attempt by masked, armed men to illegally transport 20 migrants from Belarus into Latvia, an event experts suggest may have been a provocation by Belarusian special services. In response to ongoing migration pressures and border security concerns, the Latvian government has extended its strengthened border protection regime along the Belarusian border until the end of 2026.
