Laerco BV egg production facility closed amid European Salmonella outbreak
A major Salmonella outbreak linked to contaminated eggs has caused hundreds of illnesses across Europe. In Belgium, at least 306 people have fallen ill after consuming eggs from the Laerco BV production facility in Geel. Following the discovery of the bacteria in a second poultry shed, authorities ordered the complete closure of the facility. The contaminated eggs were exported to eight European countries, including the Netherlands, France, Italy, Portugal, Luxembourg, Spain, Poland, and the Czech Republic.
In the United Kingdom, the outbreak has reached a significant scale, with the UK Health Security Agency reporting 474 confirmed cases and two deaths. Investigations suggest the infections are linked to imported eggs consumed in catering environments such as restaurants and cafes. Health officials have issued warnings to vulnerable groups, including pregnant women, young children, and the elderly, advising them to ensure all egg-containing products are thoroughly cooked.
Authorities have released specific batch codes for the recalled Belgian eggs: 2-BE-1073-01, 2-BE-1073-02, 2-BE-1073-03, and 2-BE-1073-04. Consumers are urged to check their products and return them to the point of purchase for a refund.
