Overview

A salmonella outbreak, identified in the United Kingdom around May 26, has expanded into a multi-country health crisis across Europe. Initially reported in the UK with over 200 illnesses and one death, the UK Health Security Agency described the outbreak as “unusually large and rapidly increasing.”

By late August, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control documented cases in seven countries, including the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, France, Austria, and Denmark. The total number of affected individuals has reached more than 340. The United Kingdom remains the hardest hit with at least 207 cases, followed by the Netherlands with 106 cases, Belgium with 15, Germany with six, France with four, Austria with two, and Denmark with one.

Health authorities suspect the source to be imported eggs served in restaurants and cafes, as 83% of those infected reported eating food prepared outside the home. While the investigation initially focused on eggs, authorities have since expanded their scope to include poultry products following reports in the Netherlands of infected individuals consuming chicken.

In the UK, more than one-third of patients required hospitalization, with some developing life-threatening blood infections. Hospitalized victims have ranged in age from infants under one year old to seniors over 90. Experts warn that case numbers may continue to rise until the exact source is identified and control measures are implemented.
