Belgium extends military presence in Brussels stations
The Belgian government has extended the military presence at railway and metro stations in Brussels for at least another six months. Defence Minister Theo Francken and Interior Minister Bernard Quintin announced the decision, stating that the state must regain control of certain hotspots due to a dire security situation.
Operation Urban Shield, which involves approximately 200 soldiers patrolling stations to combat drug trafficking and support police efforts, has seen an 11% decline in recorded incidents since its launch in April. The ministers noted significant decreases in robberies, illegal residence, and weapon possession.
Additionally, the extension includes the continuation of Operation Green Shield, which deploys soldiers in Brussels, Antwerp, and Liège to protect Jewish sites and institutions.
