Belgium mandates helmets for electric mobility devices

New regulations in Belgium mandate helmet use for operators of motorized personal mobility devices with a design speed exceeding 20 km/h. Effective September 1, 2026, this rule is based on the technical construction speed of the vehicle rather than the actual speed at which the user is traveling.

This requirement applies to various devices, including electric scooters, monowheels, electric skateboards, and hoverboards. However, devices designed to exceed 25 km/h are no longer permitted as standard motorized mobility devices on public roads. Users must choose between a suitable moped helmet or a bicycle helmet that provides sufficient protection to the temples and the back of the head.

The Belgian federal government introduced these measures to address rising traffic accidents and the high risk of head and brain injuries associated with these vehicles. An exception is made for individuals with reduced mobility using devices specifically designed for their needs.
