Belgium retail sales rise while overall economy stalls in Q2 2026

In June 2026 Belgian retail sales volume grew 3.1% month‑on‑month, driven by strong performance in specialized stores. Motor fuel sales rose 9% and other consumer goods up 6.9%, while non‑specialized food and drink outlets fell 1.4%. On a yearly basis, total retail volume was up 3.3% versus June 2025, with notable annual gains of 9.8% in specialized consumer products and modest increases in clothing and footwear.

At the same time, Belgium’s overall economy showed no growth in the second quarter of 2026, making it the weakest performer in the Eurozone. Annual GDP growth slowed to just 0.5%, roughly half the Eurozone average of 1%. Added value fell 0.8% in industry and 0.5% in construction, while services managed a slight 0.2% rise. Inflation remained high at about 4.1%‑4.2% year‑on‑year, according to Statbel data.
