Belgium economic stagnation 2026

In the second quarter of 2026 Belgium’s economy showed virtually no growth. GDP was flat at 0 % in Q2, pulling the annual growth rate down to about 0.5 %, well below the Eurozone average. The lack of expansion heightened budget pressures, requiring roughly €1.5 billion in additional savings to meet fiscal targets.

At the same time, retail activity displayed pockets of strength. June retail sales volume rose 3.1 % month‑on‑month, driven by specialized stores, motor fuel (+9 %) and other consumer goods (+6.9 %). Year‑on‑year retail volume was up 3.3 %, with notable gains in specialized consumer products. However, broader economic indicators remained weak: industry added value fell 0.8 %, construction declined 0.5 %, and services only managed a modest 0.2 % rise. Inflation stayed high at around 4.1‑4.2 %.

Analysts point to Belgium’s automatic wage indexation—initially supportive during the Ukraine‑related inflation surge—as a factor now dampening growth, alongside structural weaknesses in construction and industry. Despite isolated retail gains, the overall economic picture remained stagnant, reinforcing Belgium’s position as the weakest performer in the Eurozone for the quarter.
