Belgium to Enable Smartphone Digital Signatures via MyGov.be App This Autumn

The Belgian government announced that, starting this autumn, citizens will be able to sign official documents directly from the MyGov.be mobile application. The digital signature added to the app will have the same legal value as a handwritten signature, eliminating the need for a physical ID card reader.

The change follows approval of a draft law by the Council of Ministers and is supported by ministers for Digital Affairs Vanessa Matz and Interior Bernard Quintin. Around 630,000 Belgians already use MyGov.be, and roughly 90 % own a smartphone, which is expected to boost adoption of electronic signatures.

Beyond document signing, the government aims to expand the app into a full digital wallet that could eventually store a digital ID card and driving licence, further simplifying administrative procedures for both citizens and public officials.
