EU e‑ID rollout, plastic licences, digital trust
Entities: European Union · Electronic Personal Identity Card (eSzemélyi) · Greek Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport · Romania · Hungary
Overview
Italy continues the rollout of its electronic Carta d’Identità Elettronica (CIE) with longer service windows, home‑visit signing and senior outreach; paper cards must be surrendered by 31 January 2027 and will no longer be accepted for travel after 3 August 2026. Greece is issuing new plastic‑format identity cards nationwide. Legacy blue police IDs remain usable for remote electronic‑identification until 25 September 2027 but will cease to be accepted for international travel from 3 August 2026. Hungary will retire pre‑2000 book‑format personal ID cards on 3 August 2026, offering free replacements for citizens aged 70+ and mobile‑office services for those with mobility or health limitations. Across the EU, digital‑trust platforms are being upgraded for e‑signing, biometric authentication and cryptographic assurance. The EU age‑verification app remains vulnerable to a client‑side bypass, while Google Wallet adds a zero‑knowledge “Proof of Age” function aligned with the European Digital Identity Wallet (EUDI). Public awareness of the EUDI Wallet is limited: a July survey found only 23 % of German respondents familiar with the concept, though trust rises to 73 % among those aware. Malta has launched a €15.6 million tender to develop a fully compliant EUDI Wallet platform for the whole EU and a €310 k tender for online ID‑verification software for its national eID system. New AI‑driven verification tools have entered the market: Shufti’s AI Suite and BixeLab’s Birdix platform. On 3 August 2026 the EU will end the validity of all paper personal identity cards issued before 2000; registers will be updated automatically. Affected citizens must apply in person for a new electronic ID, with free permanent cards for those aged 70 and mobile assistance for health‑related limitations. Romania will issue its legacy 1997‑type ID only in exceptional diplomatic cases.
