Belgium transport: TEC fare hikes and SNCB strategic shifts

Public transport providers in Belgium are implementing significant changes to their service and pricing models. The Walloon transport network, TEC, will introduce a new fare structure starting February 1, following a decree by the Walloon Parliament aimed at increasing revenue and funding operations. This change includes the removal of several near-free options, such as the 12-euro annual subscription. Under the new system, annual Express subscriptions for the 12-25 age group will cost 384 euros, while those over 26 will pay 890 euros. Specific rates have also been set for seniors, BIM status beneficiaries, and large families.

Separately, the Belgian national railway company, SNCB, has unveiled its 2026-2029 transport plan. The plan introduces the ‘Train+’ formula, which offers more advantageous rates during off-peak hours and weekends. However, the commuter advocacy group Navetteurs.be has criticized the strategy, arguing that it prioritizes leisure travelers over daily commuters. The group suggests that SNCB is focusing on growth in off-peak segments to prepare for the potential end of its public service contract in 2032, when it may face private competition.
