Belgian public transport service and pricing changes

Overview

Belgium is implementing significant changes to its public transport services and pricing models. The national railway company, NMBS (also referred to as SNCB), has launched a multi-year transport plan for 2026-2029. This initiative aims to increase train supply by nearly 600 trains per week and improve service at 178 stations, part of a broader goal to grow passenger numbers by 30% by 2032.

As part of this strategic shift, SNCB introduced the ‘Train+’ formula, which offers more advantageous rates during weekends and off-peak hours. This move has faced criticism from the commuter advocacy group Navetteurs.be, which argues the strategy prioritizes leisure travelers over daily commuters in anticipation of potential private competition following the end of the company’s public service contract in 2032.

Simultaneously, the Walloon transport network, TEC, is introducing a new fare structure effective February 1. Following a decree by the Walloon Parliament to increase revenue, the new system removes several low-cost options, such as the 12-euro annual subscription, and establishes new rates for various age groups and demographics.
