Belgrade plans demolition of Staklenac market amid archaeological concerns

The city of Belgrade is preparing to demolish the Staklenac shopping centre on Republic Square to make way for new development. Archaeologists anticipate that the demolition could uncover significant historical remains, including Austrian fortifications such as the Karlov bastion and other structures dating from 1717‑1739. Adam Crnobrnja, president of the Serbian Archaeological Society, warned that any discovered artifacts will be subject to legal protection procedures and decisions by relevant authorities, experts, and the public. He cited examples from Thessaloniki and Turkey where archaeological finds were preserved during construction projects. The demolition has not yet begun, and officials have not confirmed how they will handle any potential discoveries.
