Belgrade Staklenac market demolition
Overview
In late July 2026 Belgrade announced plans to demolish the Staklenac shopping centre on Republic Square to make way for new development. Archaeologists warned that the demolition could uncover historic Austrian fortifications from the early 18th century, stressing that any finds would be subject to legal protection.
By early August the city confirmed that the temporary Staklenac market would be dismantled as part of the final phase of compensating stall owners, clearing the site for the first line of the Belgrade metro. Authorities also outlined a temporary relocation of the nearby Bajlonija market, with a future modern rebuild planned near Linijski park.
